Thyroid countdown

26 days since I jettisoned the last of the thyroid medication! I feel fine, normal, not any different from when on the medication.

From what I’ve read, that means my gut is healing, my inflammation is down. My body is no longer attaching my thyroid. My thyroid was not too badly damaged, and it is now able to work as designed. I think it will always be something to be aware of. That I will need to check it with blood work a couple of times a year, and it would be the first place I’d look, if I were to experience any thyroid type symptoms again. But for now, I’m just thankful that something is working right!

The bigger question is: If my body has healed enough to stop attaching my thyroid, then will it also, perhaps, someday, maybe, I hope, stop attacking my joints?

As I understand the science behind this (Disclaimer:  there’s not much science out there to read and I’m no scientist so could be reading it wrong), in my case, one of my body’s triggers is gluten. The undigested gluten protein leaks through my gut, attaches to cell receptors, in my case cell receptors in the joint capsules and thyroid, and then the white cells rush in and attack. Of course, there may be other triggers. I have a long history of urinary tract infections, and that points to a possible bacterial trigger. I haven’t considered looking at long-term antibiotics for two reasons. One, I am doing really well with what I’m doing now and want to give my body a chance to heal itself naturally, and most importantly, the antibiotics would wreak havoc with my intestines, which are still healing from the Celiac Disease.

So, for now, I’ll interpret my healing thyroid as a good sign, and hope that my body can do the same for my joints.

If you want to read some of the science I’ve found that relates to RA, these are my go to guys. Do a search on Arthritis, and you’ll find limited, but fascinating, information, with the research studies cited. They are both willing to discuss in private email.
